Embryo Transfer

Embryos are formed by the fusion of sperm and egg. A zygote forms initially and once it divides it becomes an embryo. The embryos divide/cleave periodically. By day 2 we expect a 4 celled embryo and by day 3 an 8 celled embryo forms. Blastocyst is a highly developed embryo. Embryos are transferred based on various factors. The quality of the endometrium, the grade of the embryos, the mothers age, the period of infertility, the number of embryos available, all play a part.

Embryo transfer is done by embryologists. The embryologists use a special transfer catheter to effect the transfer. Sometimes embryo transfers are done under ultrasound guidance. However, there is no evidence to say that ultrasound guided transfer is better.
